Learning About Buddhism

Image
Room 10 has been exploring Buddhism this week. We have a large community who follow Buddhism at Glen Taylor School. We started our exploration by tapping into our Mon/Burmese children and their knowledge of Buddhism. We then watched a video about the life of Buddha. We are creating slideshows in groups to share our learning and have started our Buddha art. Sar Yar Mon had an awesome idea- to bring things related to Buddhism to share with Room 10. This is Sar Yar Mon's Buddha necklace.  This is Hein's "abadit" - it is a meditating bead chain for children who are learning to meditate. It has 9 beads because when Hein does a prayer he has to rub the beads 9 times. This is Sar Yar Mon's lucky charm bracelet- you can wear them to protect you and keep you safe. This is Tracey's adult meditating beads- there are 108 beads on the chain- because when Buddha was born he had 108 patterns on his feet- she meditates everyday before she sleeps.

Room 10's Collaborative Tongan Tapa Cloth

For Tongan Language Week Mr Mailau taught us about the significance of the Tapa cloth to the Tongan community. We all got a chance to make our own tapa cloth out of brown paper. We looked at some designs and patterns and created our own version. Do you like it?

Handmade Rawena Bread and Home Made Butter With Mr Mailau

Image
Mr Mailau made Rawena bread and butter out of cream with Room 10 to celebrate Te Reo Week. Room 10 enjoyed the cooking process and we were proud of the results. It's always good when you get to eat what you made at the end!

Scribble-bots With Room 1!

Image
Room 1 came over to Room 10 this afternoon and showed off their Scribble Bots that they showcased in assembly a few weeks ago. A Scribble Bot is a handmade robot that scribbles! It is made up of a paper cup, battery packs, motor, rubber (to counter balance) and 4 felts taped to the side of the cups. Thank you Room 1, Room 10 had a lot of fun!

Crystal Making!

Room 10 was most interested in the crystals we saw when we went to see what other classes had done for science. We made edible crystal out of water and sugar- not everyone liked eating/drinking it- the crystals were yummier then the syrup!
